The Marble & Granite centre’s sculpture finds new home at RHS Chatsworth Flower Show

The Marble & Granite Centre’s Antithesis of Sarcophagi sculpture is set to take pride of place at Chatsworth House this June (7-11), where it will be one of the exhibits at the inaugural RHS Chatsworth Flower Show.

The Antithesis of Sarcophagi is, at least on first glance, an anonymous granite cube with a mysterious inscription featured on one side. On closer inspection, visitors to Chatsworth House will discover an intriguing and mysterious garden visible only through small circular holes carved through the 44 tonne rough granite sculpture. The internal, rejuvenating woodland garden represents a world turned inside out; not only as a garden within a sculpture – but also as a metaphor for desolation versus life, and civilisation versus nature.

The work was designed by letter carvers and artists Martin Cook and Gary Breeze, and was previously exhibited at the 2016 RHS Chelsea Flower Show – where it won both a Gold medal and Best Fresh Garden. It is sponsored by The Marble & Granite Centre Ltd, one of the UK’s largest and most comprehensive stone wholesalers.

The powerful artwork will be used to help Chatsworth visitors explore the beauty and majestic nature of natural stone sculptures. Initially featuring in the FreeForm garden section of the show, the sculpture will then be installed within the grounds of the Chatsworth estate for at least a year, before being auctioned as a work of public art.

“It is thrilling to work alongside artists and sculptors who enjoy using natural stone,” commented Stephen Pike, managing director of The Marble & Granite Centre Ltd. “Martin and Gary have created something unique, and It’s great to see that The Antithesis of Sarcophagi has taken on a life of its own. I am sure that it will be a talking point for the many visitors to Chatsworth and the RHS Flower Show.”
