Inspired by the Saga region of Japan where the designer grew up, this garden is harmonious, providing a peaceful space where visitors are encouraged to be thankful for life’s opportunities. ‘Hagakure’, meaning ‘hidden leaves’, is taken from the title of a Samurai text book which teaches the reader about the society’s value and way of life in Japan, and expresses living and dying.
The garden, which expresses the five senses, features a tatami mattress bench in the shade of a tree, providing a serene space away from the stress of daily life. This is emphasised through the planting palette, which is predominantly white, a symbol of purity and sacredness in Japan, and includes Cornus kousa, a bushy tree with clusters of small white flowers.
This garden is sponsored by Nishikyushu University, Hanamizuki Corporation & Ippudo and the contractor is Hanamizuki Corporation.
