Floral fancies take top titles at RHS Malvern Spring Festival

RHS Malvern Spring Festival opened its gates on Thursday 11 May with a footfall of 15,000 on the first day of the four-day event at the Three Counties Showground. Top talent from the floral world will be celebrating as numerous RHS Gold medals have been awarded.

FLORAL MARQUEE

The 2017 Malvern Floral Marquee is the biggest that has ever appeared at RHS Malvern Spring Festival. It plays host to 70 specialist nurseries, welcoming six new nurseries, three anniversaries and a record breaking number of new plant varieties. As the first major RHS show of the summer season, RHS Malvern’s Floral Marquee is famed for its vibrant and colourful early summer displays, showcasing new and exciting plants and allowing the public to indulge in some horticultural retail therapy too.

Each year RHS Malvern Spring Festival plays host to a wealth of horticultural talent and 2017 is no exception.

Taking home the top title in the Floral Marquee was:

  • Best Floral Marquee Exhibit and GOLD Medal Winner, Hampshire Carnivorous Plants (Stand MFM712), boasting a fantastic range of carnivorous plants from around the world.  Celebrating its 20th year at RHS Malvern Spring Festival, Hampshire Carnivorous Plants brings with it a new variety of Sarrecenia, ‘Scarlet Bell’, a compact and trumpet shaped fly-catcher with bright red flowers, ideal for growing indoors in greenhouses or conservatories.

An impressive 30 gold medals have been awarded in the festival iconic Floral Marquee this year, including:

  • Dibleys Nurseries (Stand MFM700/701) Gareth and Lynne Dibley, brother and sister team from specialists, have launched a rare scented Streptocarpus at this year’s RHS Malvern Spring Festival. Streptocarpus ‘Sweet Rosy’ is a large plant (approx. 30cm x 30cm) with a rounded head of scented flowers (approx. 6cm) that are a beautiful rose pink and white that change colour as they age to a soft purple and white. These are available to buy at the Festival.
  • Cooks Garden Centre (Stand MFM753) Specialising in hardy and tender plants. The stand was inspired by a ‘Wedding Breakfast’ and was created with the help of Abberley Primary School. Owner Paul Cook has inspired the pupils with an ‘introduction to horticulture’ project. The pupils have helped set up the stand and will continue to help over the four-day event.
  • Lockyer Fuchsias (Stand MFM715) Fuschia collection showcasing two new varieties, Fuschia ‘Jamam’, a bright pink and lilac coloured fuchsia and Fuschia ‘Soila’, a fuchsia with a deep pink hue.

Highlights of this year’s Festival include:

  • Plant Finder Parlour Created by BBC Gardeners’ World presenter and award winning garden designer, Joe Swift, this centerpiece to the Floral Marquee is an immersive experience like no other. Celebrating the 30th anniversary of this invaluable guide for plant lovers across the world, the Plant Finder Parlour plays host to the ancestors of the plants that feature in the specialist nurseries that surround it.
  • Show Namesake Dahlia ‘Malvern Spring’ makes its debut appearance at the show. Jon Wheatley, consultant to the National Collection of Dahlias shows Dahlia ‘Malvern Spring’, on behalf of breeder Green Yard Flowers, to celebrate one of his favourite RHS shows.
  • RHS Master Grower Fibrex Nurseries

Fibrex Nurseries has created an informative exhibit, designed to inspire visitors to extend the range of plants they grow in their garden. Their display incorporates plants from four of their collections – ferns, pelargoniums, ivies and southern hemisphere plants.

BOTANICAL ART

Each year RHS Malvern Spring Festival plays host to some of the best Botanical Artists from around the world and this year is no exception.

Best Botanical Art Exhibit – Bernard F Carter: Seed Heads

Seven artists have created spectacular works with two achieving Gold, two achieving Silver Gilt and three awarded with Silver.

SHOW GARDENS

Six leading designers created spectacular Show Gardens at RHS Malvern Spring Festival, whilst four Spa Gardens were made for the first time in the Spa Garden category. Three Gold medals were awarded, one Silver Gilt, three Silver and three Bronze at RHS Malvern Spring Festival 2017.

  • Best Show Garden‘At One With…A Meditation Garden’ by Howle Hill Nursery – GOLD
  • Best Construction Award‘At One With…A Meditation Garden’ by Howle Hill Nursery – GOLD
  • Best Spa Garden‘Molecular Garden’ by Denis Kalshnikov & Ekaterina Bolotova – GOLD
